The Home Stretch
Posted on March 28, 2012 by Matt
So the plan is to make my first landfall in Annapolis on April 14th around noon. In order for this to happen I need to enter the Chesapeake Bay by the 12th. The trip ends when I cross the finish line at the southern entrance of the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel but I’m not going to step foot on land until Annapolis. I might pass though the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel at 3am, it’s really hard to say and if the wind is good I’m going to continue to sail up the bay towards Annapolis. I will be tying off to the Sailing Hall of Fame dock downtown. If I don’t make it to the bay by the 12th then I’ll be in Annapolis roughly 2 days after I enter the bay. If I get there early then I’ll just go slow so I can arrive on the... LINK

A SINGLE-HANDED SAILOR’S APOLOGY - Thank you by the translation Barbara Fournier

A SINGLE-HANDED SAILOR’S APOLOGY

Do you want to know why I definitely admire single-handed sailors?
From Slocum to our brand new hero Matt Rutherford.
Without forgetting Moitessier, Chichester and Dumas, of course!
And including Michel Desjoyeaux, Mike Horn and the teenager Laura Dekker.
No, no, I do not exagerate when I write HERO in capital letters!
Every single-handed sailor is a hero.
And he is not a little hero, but a

Somewhere in the past (124 years ago) a north american citizen was sailing in the same region that our brave Matt is now going through.

- Yes, yes, we’re talking about that same sailor, who soon after became the first person to circumnavigate the planet Earth, which should be called WATER, in solitary …

Matt Rutherford - The fragile USA x powerful Brazil

Read my last comment posted on Matt's blog this morning.

THE FRAGILE USA AND THE POWERFUL BRAZIL

Well, well, I think I will stop running laps around this blog. I don't want to get shots from my hero Matt Rutherford, the MacGyver of the Seven Seas! LoL !

You're right Matt,  Brazilians fishermen are rude, arrogant and disrespectful. Everyone complains about them, including me.

But do not start a war between the fragile USA and the powerful Brazil. The 120 miles off the coast you are within our territorial waters (200 miles).  LoL!

Good winds Matt !

MATT RUTHERFORD

Recife (Day 262)

 1-03-2012

A few years ago a watched a documentary on Recife on the Discovery channel during shark week. Evidently Recife is the shark bite capital of the world (Bull Sharks) – not that I’m planned on going for a swim. To take a step back, after my last update I spent three days trying to get my engine started. I took off all the wires and cleaned the connections with sandpaper. I was hoping it was a bad ground wire but unfortunately that wasn’t the problem. I tried to take the starter off but for some crazy reason it is connected to the engine with round bolts with a large Allen key fitting in the center. So I didn’t have the rather odd tool required to...  LINK

After only 6 days of sailing, Pangaea arrives in Manaus! "We hugged the side of the river in the past few days", says Mike, "and we battled against the strong countercurrent, but at the same time we made excellent progress. It's super interesting to return to the Amazon after serveral years. In some places I do not recognise the river. So many changes and so many more people! I'm very much lookiing forward to the Young Explorers joining me in Manaus in a few days time. There are so many environemental and communty projects that can be... LINK

Thanks a lot for all the title suggestions for my book. In the meantime I've made my decision and will let everyone know when I'm at the Hiswa boat show in Holland. I am still enjoying Bonaire for a few more days before heading out into the cold--with the plane this time. I took a two day break from writing my book and went sailing with my minicat. There's been a lot of wind the past few days so that was great fun. Writing the book is a lot of fun too, reading all the pieces I wrote along the way and thinking about it all really makes me wanna leave again, or at least most of the time… LINK

Salve amigas e amigos leitores deste blog!
