Man sets off to circumnavigate the Americas

For six months, Matt Rutherford has been planning a trip he admits is both ambitious and, yes, even crazy.

Setting off Friday from Annapolis in a 27-foot sailboat, Rutherford plans to voyage solo through the Northwest Passage, around Alaska, around South America's southern tip at Cape Horn, and then through the Caribbean to raise money for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating, or CRAB, a nonprofit organization that gives people with disabilities the opportunity to sail.

His 23,000-mile trip could take 310 days and will pose the ultimate challenge for the 30-year-old Rutherford. Without making any stops, he'll need to travel through the Northwest Passage before the Arctic Ocean's waters freeze over, avoiding icebergs all the while. Continuing, he'll face unpredictable and potentially dangerous weather and ocean conditions that will test his intuition and ability before he finally returns... LINK
