The Chauques Islands are well suited for salmon farming - Yann Arthus Bertrand 2

The unpolluted cold waters of the Chauques Islands are well suited for salmon farming. The region is the second leading producer of salmon after Norway and has benefited from the considerable growth of aquaculture throughout the world since the 1970s. Though it is an effective alternative in the face of diminishing natural fish populations, the sector remains under-regulated. Most of the countries producing salmon lack the appropriate rules and measures to
limit aquaculture farms’ impact on the environment. Yet the concentration of fish—and thus of their waste and food put in their cages—is problematic because it excessively enriches the surrounding water and deprives it of oxygen. Aside from this eutrophication, the use of medicines and antibiotics, which are hard on the salmon themselves, threaten species near the cages. While pressure from environmentalists and consumers has led to improvements in raising land animals, little research has been done on the effects of marine farming.
