The Living Planet Aquarium is a tax-exempt 501 non-profit organization, dedicated to cultivating public interest in the environment, conservation, and the enhancement of our planet and its creatures through adoption, education, research and recreation.
TLPA holds 1250 animals and 267 species in three main exhibits: Discover Utah, Ocean Explorer, and Journey to South America. It began when Brent Andersen, a marine biologist, developed a vision for a world-class aquarium in Utah. Andersen’s vision came a little closer to reality in 1999 when two “Aqua Vans” were outfitted with educational exhibits and began visiting Utah schools. In June 2004 The Living Planet Aquarium Preview Exhibit opened in The Gateway Mall, but moved to its current Sandy, Utah location in 2006 to accommodate growing crowds and expanding exhibits.
For the past several years, The Living Planet Aquarium education department has operated two outreach programs: the Utah Waters Van and the Rainforest Van. In addition to the outreach programs, core-based field trip programs for pre-K through twelfth grade and a teacher professional development program with resources for fourth grade teachers are offered to provide a unique learning environment for students of all ages to re-kindle an appreciation of the Earth’s diverse yet fragile ecosystems.
