The World’s Ocean Just Set The Record For Warmest Temperatures In Human History

2019 was a record year for global warming. This week, NASA and NOAA announced that global surface temperatures in 2019 were the second warmest since modern record keeping began. This means that the last five years have been the hottest five years on record, the ten hottest years have all occurred since 2005, and this past decade was the hottest decade every recorded.
But the record-breaking heat is even worse for the world’s ocean. Carbon dioxide emitted into Earth’s atmosphere by humans traps heat and warms the planet. But the ocean absorbs and stores more than 90% of that excess heat causing ocean temperatures to rise.
2019 broke the record for ocean temperatures. They were the warmest ever recorded in human history. Like the entire globe, the past five years were the top five warmest years in the ocean, but in the ocean, the past ten years were also the top ten warmest years on record. Researchers measuring ocean heat content found that the heating was distributed throughout the world’s oceans, especially in the top 2000 meters.
