1 - Thank You for Not Talking Like A Pirate

September 19, 2008

If by good fortune you missed the “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”, just as well. If you managed to pass the day without a single “Aargh” or “Shiver Me Timbers” congratulations.
I have a rather good sense of humor and some might say a quick wit. (And some say half-wit, but be that as it may.) Nevertheless, I am revolted by those who confuse piracy with cute colloquialisms, funny hats and the occasional parrot. Piracy is about murder and theft. Not too unlike terrorism, though in most cases with less justification.
If piracy had disappeared in the... >>>  link-do-texto

2 - Animated Knots and Marlinspike Sailors

November 13, 2008

For those wishing to learn just a bit about sailor’s knots, Animated Boating Knots by Grog is a lot of fun. Here is a rolling hitch, a marvelously useful knot that I invariably forget how to tie whenever a need one. If you need to... >>>  link-do-texto

3 - Aquacalypse Now – The End of Fish

September 29, 2009

Daniel Pauly has an article in this month’s New Republic “Aquacalypse Now – The End of Fish“. It addresses the very real and threatening problem of overfishing. His is a great title for an article but his use of the metaphor of corporate fishing as a Ponzi scheme is interesting, but... >>>  link-do-texto

8 - Electrolux’s ‘Vac from the Sea’ Turns Ocean Plastic into Vacuum Cleaners

September 29, 2010

Yesterday we posted that scientists are not sure where all the plastic floating in the vast Atlantic and Pacific garbage patches is going. Sadly, the answer is probably not that a big vacuum cleaner is vacuuming the stuff up to recycle it. Nevertheless, here is a great story about Electrolux, which is facing, believe it or not, a shortage of recycled plastic with which to make... >>>  link-do-texto

9 - American Indian Sailed to Europe With Vikings?

December 1, 2010

Interesting new evidence that the Vikings and the North American natives, who the Vikings called skrælings may have gotten along a bit better than suggested by the sagas. DNA testing of 80 living Icelanders shows indicates a genetic variation similar to one found mostly in Native Americans.

10 - Not Swords into Plowshores but Marine Mines into Furniture

December 5, 2010

Mati Karmin, an Estonian sculptor, is not turning swords into plowshares, but he is turning marine mines into some rather remarkable furniture and household appliances. Karmin’s mine furniture is steampunk with a post-apocalyptic twist. On the northern coast of Estonia, especially on Naissaar and other islands, there were large fields of anti-submarine mines left behind when the Soviets withdrew in the early 90s. The explosives in the mines had been burned out, leaving rusting steel spheres. Karmin has turned these relics of war into armchairs, fireplaces, baby carriages, swings, beds, desks and... >>> link-do-texto
