ANKE BRANDT - 30 maritime record holders 15





ANKE BRANDT 

30-year-old Anke Brandt from Germany, now resident of Bahrain, kite surfed 251,20 km non-stop around the island Kingdom of Bahrain in 11 hours and 54 minutes. She thereby beat the current world female distance kitesurf record of 213 km, set in 2005. Anke Brandt, born in Munich and grown up in Berlin, discovered her passion for
Kitesurfing in Bahrain, where she has been living and working for the past four years. She is particularly interested in Long-Distance Racing and a regular competitor in a sport that is fast emerging in Bahrain. For her world record challenge, Anke has been training hard for 250 kilometres on the open seas of the Gulf, working-out for up to 15 hours a week. 

Causeway critical for kitesurfing 

Starting from her ‘home” base on the island of Amwaj, Anke circled the Kingdom of Bahrain counter-clockwise taking advantage of the prevailing winds and giving her the best chance to navigate the critical part of the circumnavigation; the route underneath the 14 km causeway that links Bahrain to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 


Two support boats 

Throughout the record attempt Anke has been accompanied by two support boats, carrying her food essentials and collecting data. In order to prove that she has undertaken the complete distance in one attempt it is crucial that all manner of supporting information and data such as photographs, video, GPS data and a witness book have been compiled. 

Fund raising for spinal cord research 

Ankes vision goes far beyond the record attempt as she is raising money for Wings for Life. Wings for Life is a non-profit spinal cord research foundation with the mission to find a cure for spinal cord injury.
